We know for a fact that the legislative branch of the United States is the primary source of rules, regulations, incentives, etc. regarding the manufacturing and usage of solar power. Other than these, the legislature has also paved ways to make solar power accessible to everyone. Based on data, the “sunniness” of a state does not necessarily dictate its success in solar power management. In fact, it is the cloudiest states that mostly excel in passing renewable energy bills. Sunny states on the other hand, which includes Florida of course, are doing unexpectedly poor. To be discussed below is the timeline of significant events regarding solar power in Florida which may include public rules and policies.
2006
The Enactment of the Florida Renewable Energy Technologies and Energy Efficiency Act
The State of Florida somehow granted rebates and tax credits when the Florida Renewable Energy Technologies and Energy Efficiency Act was enacted and implemented. Here, the tax credits and rebates are given when a household has installed solar photovoltaic systems. While this was successfully implemented, the program had ended last 2010.
2009
The First Solar Plant in Florida was Built
The first solar power plant in Florida, which goes by the name of “FPL DeSoto Next Generation Solar Energy Center,” was constructed back in 2009. It is named after its maker, Florida Power & Light (FPL). During its early years, the solar power plant was considered as one of the largest in the world.
2010
Florida Power & Light Creates Another Groundbreaking Project
It was in the year 2010, when FPL debuted a hybrid of solar and natural gas energy center. It was significant because it was the first of its kind in the world when it was launched.
2011
The Grant of Individual Solar Rebates
Following the close of the Florida Renewable Energy Technologies and Energy Efficiency Act, the Florida Public Service Commission then ordered large utility companies in the state to offer rebates for solar power users. However, now the program has ended. This program was closed due to its impracticality on the side of the non-solar customers
2015 Onwards…
The Tax Credit for Solar Power Users
There is tax credit granted to homeowners who have installed PV panel systems in their respective residence. This is also called Federal Residential Energy Efficient Property Credit. It was to run until the end of 2015, however it was extended until the end of 2021. The percentage of credits varies per year.
