FP&L Meddles Again
FP&L is at it again throwing roadblocks up for the solar industry by hijacking the drafting of the House Bill that will put Amendment 4’s passage into effect. Amendment 4 passed by 73% last August to prevent property tax increases on homes with solar systems. In January, FL Representative Ray Rodrigues, who is sponsoring the bill, advised drafters to use suggestions from FP&L as “a model for ‘consumer protection language’ “. He received these suggestions from FP&L just a few days after the state utility giant contributed $15,000 to his political committee.
Water Out Of Thin Air?
Researchers at UC Berkeley and MIT collaborated to create a sponge-like device that sucks up water vapor from thin air using the power of sunlight. By manipulating porous crystals known as MOFs (metal organic frameworks), scientists were able to develop these new water-harvesting devices that can produce almost 3 liters per day for every kilogram of MOF. At night, air enters the device and passes through MOFs which then capture the air’s water molecules. During the day, the sun heats the MOFs and causes water to be released by condensation. Et Voila…water!
Coal Museum Soon To Be Powered By Solar
The Kentucky Coal Mining museum, which features exhibitions documenting coal’s history, is upgrading to solar energy. Their switch to clean energy is motivated by expected savings of $8,000 to $10,000 per year. How ’bout that.
