Scroll through your Facebook newsfeed these days and you’ll feel hard-pressed to find much that Americans can agree upon. So where can we find common ground? Clean and affordable solar energy that’s been bolstered by growing legislative support, record industry growth, and dropping prices.
Last August, Floridians passed the bipartisan-backed Amendment 4 by almost 75% to prevent increased property taxes on residential and commercial solar installations. This past week, Florida’s Senate Communications, Energy and Public Utilities Committee started moving forward to put in place the new tax exemption that is projected to take effect in 2018 and last for the next two decades.
Solar is also making its mark by creating new jobs in both the energy industry and U.S. in g
eneral. In 2016, solar added more jobs than coal, oil, and natural gas combined (wow!), and 1 out of 50 new jobs created in the country were in the solar industry.
Even states that have historically relied upon and supported the fossil fuel industry such as Texas are embracing solar because of dropping prices. The Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory reported that the price of residential solar fell by at least 5% in 2015, and is projected to continue decreasing.
